Cycle 24 Comes Alive!

Finally, Sunspot Cycle 24 is coming to life as a new sunspot group emerged on the Suns southwest quadrant yesterday (Monday). This is the fourth such group this month and the effects are apparent on the HF bands with openings up to 10 metres (even late into the night) and some good sporadic-E openings on 50 MHz.

Monitoring Monthly to cease Publication

Sadly, Monitoring Monthly have announced that the May 2009 edition of the popular magazine is to be the last. Monitoring Monthly is a UK based magazine aimed primarily at the SWL community but is of interest to many radio amateurs.

The publishers have cited difficult trading conditions as the reason for this unavoidable closure. The web site will remain on-line for the foreseeable future to allow MME customers to download their electronic issues.

Solar Minima - No Light at the end of the Tunnel

Despite a new Cycle 24 Sunspot group emerging on Monday the 20th of April last, it is being reported that a Cycle 23 group (S740) has re-emerged yesterday (Thursday, 30 April).

Solar Cycle 23 is now 13 years old while the the new Cycle (24) seems to have some trouble getting started. So, the solar minima continues, for now at least.
